threat of conflict-diamonds emerges as violence escalates in bria
“A rebel attack on a rival group and civilians in the Central African Republic (Bangui) has left at least six people dead, a military official told AFP on Sunday. Rebels of the Convention of Patriots for Justice and Peace (CPJP) fired a missile at a vehicle carrying former rebels from the Union of Democratic Forces for Unity (UFDR) and civilians, the official said in Bria, the country’s main diamond mining hub.” (via Agence France-Presse)
The Central African Republic has been rocked by a recent outbreak of fighting between the rival armed groups vying for control over diamond mines. For years there has been a struggle although this is the first reported surge of violence since September 18 when 43 people were killed in a week.
The Kimberley-Process chair Mathieu Yamba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued an alert for those in the diamond industry to increase vigilance on potential conflict diamonds emerging from the Central African Republic (CAR) due to recent violence. Yamba also issued a warning last February with a similar issue in Cote d’Ivoire, although he has taken the liberty to approve conflict-laden Zimbabwe diamonds into the KP certification scheme. How does this make any sense???!!!
