As a jeweler who does not use any newly mined metals, I was deeply concerned when learning of a proposal to build the largest open pit mine in North America at the pristine landscape of Bristol Bay, Alaska. Owners propose to extract what may prove to be the richest deposit of gold and copper in the world; unfortunately at the expense of a rich ecosystem and community of people. I saw a great documentary recently called Red Gold that outlines the threat and devastation to the Bristol Bay area which is closely tied to the spawning grounds of sockeye salmon. I have personally signed the Bristol Bay Protection Pledge which assures our customers that our gold jewelry isn’t a threat to the world’s greatest wild sockeye salmon fishery — or the communities that depend upon it. Here at Linhardt Design we are are opposed to the mine, and recognize the Bristol Bay watershed as an ecosystem of international significance.
