The Cuban people are probably the most resourceful I’ve ever met. Being obsessed with classic cars (of the 50s especially) it was amazing to see American bodies of automobiles still running – albeit with Japanese-German-you-name-it parts. What I also saw in abundance were ‘joyeros,’ who do whatever it takes to fix/repurpose a specific piece of jewelry. I saw the most intricate Victorian pendants mended with plumbers’ lead solder, Russian timepieces retrofitted with Asian parts… an absolute visual hodgepodge but at the end of the day the thing was working and wearable…
