mystery photo at linhardt?

Many of you have seen this photo hanging in the gallery and have asked me about it. A few recommended I create a blog posting, so this is for you as well as the inquiring minds who want to know.

This is a photo I took back in 2007 in a remote part of Kenya with two Maasai elders as its subject. These women were captured in the middle of a “circumcision” dance for a young girl in their village who I had spent time with earlier in the day. At this particular moment when the picture was taken, the girl had been cut and was hidden in a mud hut just a few feet away from where these dances were taking place. Both women featured have gone through this ceremony decades prior; and the one on the left dances with a baby girl on her back who perhaps has a similar fate. These dances are often lead by one alternating woman who is adorned with a multi-colored round beaded necklace that is accented with the hair of a white Colobus monkey. She leads the other women who dance in a line towards a thin and bare wood pole. The wood pole marks the “boma” (hut made from cow dung and mud) in which the girl resides and recovers. There is also a leather bag propped nearby for offerings, which both signify and celebrate the Rite of Passage into womanhood.

Despite the fact that “circumcision”, or what many refer to as FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), is illegal in Kenya I have learned that many Maasai continue to practice this tradition. Regardless of how you feel about the practice (or how I feel about the practice), the concept of Ceremony and the tension that precedes it is curiously alluring and what I aimed to capture. I ask that you clear your head of judgement for the time being and invite you to view some other images I took that day—none of which, I assure you, could ever be censored: Click here to launch slideshow (please turn up your volume).

fashion week nyc collaboration announced

I am pleased to officially announce that I will be accessorizing Ann Yee’s fabulous collection for this upcoming Fashion Week NYC in early February. Ann has been a jewelry customer of mine for some time, although I had no idea she was the one behind this beautiful clothing until she approached me a few months ago about the collaboration. Ann was already hard at work in the middle of my holiday season madness, and I cannot wait to see how the collection is evolving. Stay tuned for more coverage soon!

six degrees of togetherness

Ashley's wedding ring: repurposed diamond pave with diamond metal details on outer edges; Kobie's ring: 10mm wide brushed palladium - both custom-made by Linhardt

Congratulations to Ashley and Kobie who recently tied the knot! I started working with Kobie quote some time ago on Ashley’s custom engagement ring (featured here) and they have both wonderful clients for some time now. When Kobie commissioned me for the engagement ring, he described Ashley and showed me photos – she looked all too familiar. We discovered that I had actually hung out with his soon-to-be fiance through a mutual friend months prior. This was great since I knew exactly who I was making the surprise engagement ring for…

Fast-forward a year or so… I was looking through press videos of my work for our web site and saw that Kobie and I actually had a random unknown connection even before the engagement ring commission when my jewelry got featured on Alicia Keys in this music video with Alejandro Sanz – I didn’t realize it was Kobie playing the guitar…

Seems like our paths have crossed quite a number of times already! I was honored to make both of their wedding rings and loved the vibe of their wedding! Check it out below as well as the video here! Congratulations and Thank you both so much for choosing my work to symbolize your incredible love for each other!

engagement on the highline!

Ring in-progress - Not finished or polished! It features a responsibly-sourced 1.06 Radiant with delicate diamond pave halo set in recycled platinum; hand made and custom-designed by Linhardt exclusively for Carolina

I love witnessing how much is involved when someone plans an engagement… This is the story of Daniel and Carolina, who recently got engaged in one of my favorite parks in New York City that used to be the elevated freight railroad spur – the Highline. Over the Holiday season Daniel approached me to design a ring for his beautiful girlfriend. We weren’t sure at that point how the ring was going to look – so Daniel sent me photos of Carolina, the type of jewelry she wears, her fashion sense, and told me as much as he could about her background and personality. I could tell how much he was in love with this woman just by hearing him speak. We looked at a number of different responsibly-sourced diamonds together until he finally decided on a gorgeous Radiant cut. I presented a few drawings to Daniel and we continued to sketch in person until we decided that adding a touch of Carolina’s Spanish roots with a touch of Filigree work would be perfect.

Through this entire process Daniel was also planning the perfect way to propose. He explained he was getting a group of friends together to help with the proposal and here is what he came up with (matching scarves and all!) I love the look on Carolina’s face – it is priceless! Take a look at the video here (turn up the volume and listen to the beautiful voices). Congratulations to you both! You have a great group of friends that really helped make this happen!!! And of course Kudos to Daniel for organizing all this flawlessly. Here’s to an amazing 2012!!!

millions from diamonds go to mugabe, observers say

Great article from the NY Times regarding diamonds in Zimbabwe: “Tens of millions of dollars in diamond profits are said to be bypassing the treasury of Zimbabwe and ending up with President Robert Mugabe and his supporters.” Read here!

the sustainable style of summer rayne oakes

Summer Rayne Oakes wears a hand-sculpted Linhardt cuff made of "Pui," a Colombian wood that has been salvaged from furniture scraps.

One of our first photo shoots was with Entrepreneur/Eco-fashion Model/Activist  Summer Rayne Oakes, who is probably one of the most interesting people I have ever met. Not only is she naturally gorgeous, Cornell-educated, the founder of Source4Style (among MANY other accomplishments) she houses an exotic bug collection in her Brooklyn apartment. I recently sent her a photo of the giant Weta (one of the largest/heaviest insects known to man), which she knew about years ago and proved it with her video (which gave me both the giggles and the creepies.) I checked out some other images of Summer and saw this photo which was not from our original shoot, but shot some time thereafter. Thanks, Summer for being such a great supporter of Linhardt jewelry after all this time!

‘global witness’ exits diamond certification scheme

The NGO Global Witness has announced to leave the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. As you know I have been blogging about this for a while now (click on “Responsible Sourcing” to read more) and have strong opinions on selling KP-Certified diamonds in my gallery. Global Witness and I are on the same page in that we both believe there are too many loopholes in the certification process that have not been fixed – and there seems to be no sign of reform. Charmian Gooch, a founding director of Global Witness, said “The scheme has failed three tests: it failed to deal with the trade in conflict diamonds from Côte d’Ivoire, was unwilling to take serious action in the face of blatant breaches of the rules over a number of years by Venezuela and has proved unwilling to stop diamonds fuelling corruption and violence in Zimbabwe. It has become an accomplice to diamond laundering, whereby dirty diamonds are mixed in with clean gems… Consumers have a right to know what they’re buying, and what was done to obtain it… The diamond industry must finally take responsibility for its supply chains and prove that the stones it sells are clean.” Here at Linhardt we do everything in our power to responsibly source diamonds and obtain third-party verifications for these stones; and that does NOT include the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. This was a decision I made earlier in the year when the controversial Marange diamonds were approved into the Scheme. Glad to know Global Witness is also taking a stand on the KP!

simple engagement ring in custom “champagne” gold

simple engagement ring recycled custom alloy gold

Congratulations to clients Carly and Sean who are recently engaged with a gorgeous simple Linhardt solitaire featuring the custom “Champagne” gold! Originally I experimented with gold colors since responsibly-sourced Champagne Diamonds (which are naturally champagne in color) did not look right with the typical yellow gold mix; and also looked “off” with the regular pink gold mix… so I used an alloy whose color fell between these two tones. Through the years more and more people loved the color of this custom mix on its own and now I use it to compliment white diamonds (as with Carly and Sean’s ring) in addition to steely-blue sapphires, you name it! Come in to Linhardt Design and take a look at this very special mix!
